After the British seized the Cape of Good Hope area in 1806, many of the Dutch settlers (the Boers) trekked north to found their own republics. The discovery of diamonds (1867) and gold (1886) spurred wealth and immigration and intensified the subjugation of the native inhabitants. The Boers resisted British encroachments, but were defeated in the Boer War (1899-1902). The resulting Union of South Africa operated under a policy of apartheid - the separate development of the races. The 1990s brought an end to apartheid politically and ushered in black majority rule.

Circle of Time is a spell binding story about three men – an elderly man, an old man and a young man. A secret society, known by few as The Circle, whose watchword is "sacrifice, service, suffering", had agreed that its diverse members join forces against apartheid. This rebel band, unlike other groups has a different kind of leader, an old man with a vision of the future.

At the end of World War II, Jan Linden, a proud Afrikaner, and a South African police officer with a family history dating back to the year 1620, returns home to Johannesburg, South Africa to continue his career as a detective. He investigates two unsolved murder cases, both linked to each other and stumbles on to clues that leads him to suspect a conspiracy.

No one believes him, but Jan feels that he is one step from learning the truth. Jan’s steadfast belief that his country is in danger has created a fixation to expose the old man. His blind passion causes him to lose the only woman he loves. He also gradually loses the respect of his peers and supervisor. He slowly becomes an alcoholic. The plot reveals Jan's inner conflict between what is legally and morally right versus killing the men behind the secret organization, and responsible for killing his father.
